The WoodMaster floor staining process:
- Step 1 – To start the process we will perform a site survey. We will provide a full written estimate and we will discuss the best approach with your floor. We will ensure that you agree on the cost and then we will schedule a suitable time and date to attend.
- Step 2 – We will begin our work with a full sanding of the boards to strip away all old lacquer and oils. This will bring back the virgin boards. Our large industrial belt and planetary sanding machines will leave the wooden floor smooth and flat. We’ve also just invested in a brand new 3 head machine. It is custom made for modern engineered boards and for cases where a belt sander can’t be used.
- Step 3 – Once the old sealer has been stripped away, we will treat the floor with our 3 head finishing machine and this will sand out micro-fine scratches caused by sanding. At this point, the floor will be smooth and ready for us to apply the sealer.
- Step 4 – For the next step, we will give you a demonstration of the possible finishes and stain options. We put these on your floor so you can see exactly what the finish will look like. If requested, we can also use a natural lacquer for a beautiful and durable finish. Stains can also be applied if you would like to alter the look of the floor more dramatically with a new colour.
- Step 5 – Next, a base coat will be applied to fill up the wood and it will provide the first layer of protection.
- Step 6 – Once the base coat is dry, we will then sand the floor again and this will remove any areas that prickle up from the base coat. This step prepares the floor for the final coats of finish.
- Step 7 – Next, we will apply two coats of top finish. The top finish can be a 1 or 2 pack lacquer depending on the wood. We can then apply oils when a colour change is requested or when an enhanced level of smoothness is needed.
- Step 8 – Once everything is dry, the floor will be ready to use once again. We’ll let you know how long you should leave the floor before walking on it.
Once the work is complete, we are happy to provide maintenance advice and after-care products.

Depending on the type of wood and condition, excellent results can be achieved with our restoration services as we are bringing back a fresh new layer of the wood. However, an old Victorian pine floor will always look aged and have patina but this is often seen as a positive with the character of a period property.
